The Multiple Listing Service is a repository for all of the homes that are for sale. Virtually every home that is for sale is listed on the MLS, and real estate agents can perform very detailed searches on this database to find the properties that are best-suited to you. While websites like Trulia and Zillow pull data from the MLS, they don’t always have all of the information or the most recent information. Thus, it’s best to work directly with a real estate agent who has direct access to MLS listings. The MLS listing service contains valuable information such as the square footage of properties, pictures of the properties and the general amenities included with the property.
You can perform your own searches on websites that pull data from the MLS, but there’s no guarantee that the listings provided will be correct. It’s best to forward any listings that you’re interested in to your real estate agent so that they can check the information against the MLS and ensure that it is correct before moving forward. The MLS service is not accessible to the general public.
